It’s difficult to think about cutting the costs on your wedding, but sometimes you can get carried away with plans and before you know it your 'small, intimate' wedding has turned into a £20,000 bill.
Here are some expenses you may be able to reduce without ruining your day.
Do you need to…
1) Get married on the weekend?
Weekday weddings can be cheaper, and off season in February or October can be cheaper still, and just as romantic.
2) Why invite so many people?
The main cost of most weddings is the catering costs, so why not invite fewer people to your ceremony and reception and invite your more casual friends to the evening party? Or have an evening party on a different night for other friends. Your true friends will want to celebrate with you in whatever form suits you, and will understand your need to keep costs light.
3) Buy a wedding dress?
How about hiring a wedding dress, or considering second hand.

4) Why Hire Suits?
If your groom already has a smart suit that he is happy to wear then suggest that himself and his best man just buy a new shirt and matching tie. This will work especially well at a more casual wedding.
5) Why Buy expensive bridemaid dresses and accessories?
A clever yet stylish way to reduce the cost of bridemaid dresses is to ask them to wear a black dress....which any fashion concious lady has in her wardrobe already! Then they can be accessorised with a simple white flower or matching clutch bags.
6) Do you need fancy wedding stationary?
How about making your own stationary, and make it really personal. These days there are lots of card making kits available, or you get a PC program to do it for you.
7) Why have an expensive Wedding Cake?
After all it’s only going to cut up and eaten with a tea or coffee, how about getting friends or family to make you a cake, or cupcakes that they can make in batches and freeze until they are needed.
If you do want to buy a cake why not use it as the dessert to save on wedding breakfast costs.

8) Hire a professional photographer?
If you have a keen amateur photograph amoungst your friends and family then ask them to take shots of the day and have them printed. Disposable cameras are always great for getting your friends involved in the picture taking, and with digital cameras it has become easy to take and share shots instantly.
Of course, you take the risk of not getting the exact shots you desire, but you have to weigh up if this is important to you or not.
9) Do you need to have favours?
They look very nice, but often favours can add up, and at £3 a guest you can soon be looking at paying £200 + that you don't really need. Instead, leave a note on the table saying that you are donating to a charity close to your hearts, at least you know your money is going to a good cause and not just going to be left at the end of the night!
10) A Posh Chauffeur driven car?
Maybe you know someone with a nice car who could help you out, then get them to drive or a friend. A simple piece of thick white ribbon from the doors to the centre grid of the car make it look professional and ornate.
Alternatively, if you have a character car that you both love, such as a mini, beetle, nissan figaro or sports car, why not use that? It will add character to your day and give friends a taste of what you love as a couple.
11) Pay for everyone’s drinks all night?
It would be better to set a side a fixed amount for the bar bill, and once that’s gone let people pay for their own. Also think about how much wine to put on the tables and whether you really need drinks on arrival at the reception.

10) A luxurious honeymoon?
How about a long weekend somewhere in the UK. It may be just as good, and it’s an option more and more couples are now considering.
