Wedding lingerie is a vital part of your wedding outfit.
There are a multitude of styles and types of bridal lingerie available. Although there are other colors available, the most popular color is still white as a symbol of purity.
Consider the tips below before you shop for bridal lingerie.
1. When ordering your lingerie, place your order as early as possible so ensure on time delivery. You need to do this at least 8 weeks in advance.
2. When you are shopping for a gown, bring different styles of your own lingerie so you will have an idea of what style works best under the gown.
3. Consider the material used for your gown. If it is made of silk that clings to your body, you should buy lingerie that is seamless. Check if the gown has underwire, boning or other support material that is already sewn into the dress. You might not need to wear a bra underneath.
Bras
Wear the bra you have decided to get for your first gown fitting or buy different styles that fit well. Select a style that feels comfortable and provides adequate coverage and support. The types of bra available include:
- Strapless bras for a strapless gown or one with spaghetti straps
- Bustier types with a low back to use with gowns with a shallow plunging back
- Halter bras or deep-plunge bras for dresses with deep necklines and halter dresses
- Backless bras for gowns with very low backs and mermaid-style dresses; one that can still provide some support in the front
- Adhesive bras to provide some support (advisable for those with smaller breasts) and eliminate bra lines
Panties
Choose those that you feel comfortable wearing in satin, silk or nylon. Avoid lace panties unless your gown has a wide skirt as lace will definitely show in tighter gowns.
Here are some basic rules to guide you.
- Thongs – you should be comfortable and used to wearing this type, otherwise avoid this one
- Seamless underwear – avoids panty lines and gives a smooth and seamless look particularly under sheath dresses
- Boy shorts and Tangas – these are more comfortable than thongs and also help avoid panty lines
- Padded panties – these can add some curve to a flat derriere
- Support Briefs - these can make you feel slightly more confident about your wasteline, however there is no need to go overboard with this, as your dress might be tight fitting enough, and you need to be able to sit and enjoy your meal without feeling restricted.
Hosiery
Hosiery can act as a barrier to prevent friction between your feet and your shoes. Choose sheer stockings. Try popular colors like pale pink, blue or lavender. Buy several pairs to change into in case of runs.
Below are some tips to guide you in your choice:
- Knee Highs –ideal when you are wearing long gowns
- Silk Stockings – used with a garter belt; may not stay clipped to the garter belt.
- Stay Up Thigh-High Stockings –suited for ladies with slim thighs. These provide the ease and comfort of wearing stockings without worrying about a garter belt. Do not choose one with lace tops as these will show through.
- Pantyhose – can transform and smoothen your legs, give some support to the tummy region and lift your derriere; may not look good to the groom.
- Footless Pantyhose – ideal for summer and beach weddings where you can show your beautifully pedicured toes.
- Fishnets – can provide a flirty look. Wear this over a pair of skin-toned or nude pantyhose.
- Seamed Stockings – to complete a retro look. Just make sure that the seams are straight.
