Photographers descride their approach to photography in a few different ways. It is important to know what type of photographer you are hiring on your wedding day, because this will dictate what images you come away with.
There are two primary approaches to wedding photography that are recognised today:
Traditional and Photojournalistic.
Traditional wedding photography refers to more classically posed images and a great deal of photographer control and interaction on the day of the wedding.
The results will be exactly the photographs you expect, of the people that you have identified to be essential to capture.
A list of suggested groups for wedding photographs can be found below.
Tip: You should remember that at least 1 1/2 hours of your wedding day will spent with the photographer gathering the shots that you have requested.
Photojournalistic or Repotage wedding photography takes its cue from editorial reporting styles and focuses more on candid and unposed images with little photographer interaction.
If you hire a photographer who specalises in Photojournalistic or Repotage the emphasis will be to capture the story and atmosphere from the day, so the viewer has an appreciation of what the wedding was like. However there will be no guarantee that every essential member of the wedding party is captured in a series of pre-determined poses.
Tip: Ask an Usher or Bridesmaid to work with the photographer to point out your family members and gather people together to be in the right place at the right time
For us, the perfect scenario is to book a north west wedding photographer that falls somewhere in the middle of these two styles (which many do!). Allow the wedding photographer to have the freedom to take shots of guests in their most natural light, however hand them a list of 5 or 10 posed shots that you would like of yourselves, your families, the wedding party and close friends, (allowing a 30 minute time slot in your day for these).
